Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $400**

Europe, Iberian Peninsula, ca. 1612 CE. A striking brass vessel presenting with a circular base and thick walls that rise outwards to a large annular rim bearing two high zoomorphic handles. Intricate high reliefs of two scenes from the New Testament adorn each side; the burial of Jesus and the Resurrection. Both framed by a petaloid window with a textured background, the former depicts two haloed figures standing above a lifeless Christ, who is being placed into his tomb by two other figures, while the latter features a standing Jesus draped in a shroud with arms outstretched to his sides in a blessing pose surrounded by three figures bowing. The frames of each are embellished with radiating striations in each upper corner and separated by a leaflike pillar topped with a protruding spherical dot. The lustrous vessel additionally boasts a top banner inscribed with "AMOR CUSTU SAE TE ALMA A 1612". Size: 5.25" in diameter x 8.125" H (13.3 cm x 20.6 cm)

Provenance: ex private Ventura County, California, USA collection, acquired prior to 2008

#154004
Condition
Two holes on back side of handles indicate that a loop handle connecting the two is missing. Expected surface wear with some scratches, smudges, and light softening of detail commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent with rich patina and nice earthen deposits in recessed areas and interior.
