Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
North America, probably Wyoming, Green River Formation, Eocene period, ca. 56 to 33 million years ago. A fabulous collection of three stone matrices with fossilized fish captured within each! The first is roughly circular with three fish, the next contains a single fish, and the last has two. The fish have fossilized to a caramel brown hue, and their spines, fins, and the distinctive curved line of the operculum gill cover, are well preserved! These each appear to be Knightia, an extinct species of freshwater fish that resembled modern day herrings or sardines. These fish were abundant in schools across North America and Asia, which is why many fossils contain several fish! Size of largest: 3.5" Diameter (8.9 cm); smallest: 2" L x 2.125" W (5.1 cm x 5.4 cm)
Lucite stands are not included.
Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
