Keith "Little Bear" Brown (b. 1951, South Carolina); molded earthenware vessel with flared neck, each side features a Chief's head with headdress having incised decoration; signed on base "Keith / Brown / (paw) / 9-10"; 7 3/4"H, 10 3/4"W; good condition---Keith Brown is a Catawba Indian traditional potter. He grew up watching and helping his grandmother, Edith Harris Brown, and other elders of the tribe make pottery. Today, Keith carries on the tradition by gathering clay from locations used by his family for generations and pit-fires his pottery as his ancestors have done for centuries. He is an educator, storyteller and a South Carolina Arts Commission Artist In Residence. He travels around the Carolinas teaching Catawba history, culture and pottery. (Ref. 131-1)
