18k diamond, sapphire & carved opal Native American, 14k chain.This pendant has 11 round .03ct G color full cut VS1 clarity diamonds and two .03ct round sapphires, for a total diamond weight of .33cts and a total sapphire weight of .06cts.The natural opal carving depicts a Native American with headdress. This type of jewelry was done in Australia, Mexico, California and the Far East. The marks on the chain and the gold work suggest California, perhaps in the 1950's or early 1960's.

Davids notes: As a gemologist, I can't tell you how hard it is to carve opal, the stone is comprised of 10% to 20% water, leaving open the possibility of encountering a crack or break that causes the carving to collapse in the middle of the project. A highly skilled carver, as in the carving of this lot, will take the natural color changes of the stone, and incorporate them into the design, so the dark part of the stone becomes the face of the Indian, the orange part of the stone, the feathers, etc. This piece is a highly skilled work of art and a one of kind item.
