Item Details
Description
Silver and coconut cup, c.1750, maker IP. Possibly colonial silver.
Height:7.5 inches.

Davids notes: handmade and hand hammered, the silver and coconut shell appear to be from the mid 18th century, might be earlier or slightly later. Silver tests 925 or higher purity. The makers mark of IP suggests either John Parsons or Josiah Piercy. The fact that the makers mark is not accompanied by a series of English silver standard, date marks and town marks indicates it might have been made for the English market in India, or possibly the Island of Jamaica, or somewhere outside of England.

The oval silver cartouche on the front, displays a hand engraved plant or flower, above a scrolled rope. Below is the letter M done in the style of monograms and letters of the 18th century and early 19th century, with decorative lines around the main letter.
