Decree relating to the establishment of a bishopric in California to which would be transferred the administration of the California Pious Fund, no small matter with large funds involves. OCLC, which locates only one copy, at the Huntington Library, provides an informative abstract: "Joaquin de Iturbide, on the letterhead of his Secretaria de Justicia y Negocios Eclesiasticos, promulgates the congressional decree ordering initiation of the process of elevating the Californias to the status of a bishopric, the selection of a candidate for the position of bishop to be proposed for the pope, the appropriation of 3000 pesos for financing the process, and the appropriation of an additional 6000 pesos annually for the maintenance of the see until it establishes its own financing. The mandate also entrusts to the bishop and his successors the administration of the California Pious Fund." Signed and dated in type: Me?xico 19 Setiembre de 1836. J. de Iturbide.
