Rare and possibly unique, glazed studio pottery bust of a child, hand crafted and presumed one of a kind piece by Waylande DeSantis Gregory (1905-1971). Signed and annotated by Gregory within the interior 'Waylande Gregory Cranbrook '32'. Would have been created during his first year of residency at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Piece was entered into the 'Fifteenth Annual Exhibition of Work by Cleveland Artists and Craftsmen' (Cleveland Museum of Art) which was held from May 3 to June 11, 1933; for this he would receive an honorable mention. Original formal letterhead and certificate awarded by the Cleveland Museum of Art for this exhibition also included, both signed by Director William M. Milliken (with original envelope, post marked May 18, 1933). Also to include one page from a handwritten letter (on Wayland's personal Cranbrook Studio stationery w/ letterhead) presumed to have been executed by Mrs. Gregory or a relative, dated May, 1932. Details within letter refer to the bust as 'little Marjorie'. Also included are six rare original 1930's to 1940's snapshot photographs; two which feature the bust of 'Marjorie', one shown with Mrs. Gregory in foreground. One photograph shows Mrs. Gregory lounging with Madonna and Child statue featured in background. Two snapshots show Waylande posed with child / children, one standing before Gregory's "Fountain of the Atom". Ceramic bust measures approx. 10" H x 8.5" inches W. Light crazing to glaze and other light imperfections associated with production. Mild surface wear to bottom rim, otherwise excellent with no chips, cracks or scratches. Some wear to hand written letter and envelope to Cleveland Museum papers, otherwise included ephemera in good standing.
