Description
An outstanding 18th century terracotta bust by Jean Jacques-Caffieri depicting Corneille Van Cleve. The bust is signed on the back beneath the shoulder line "J.J. Caffieri, 1775, Paris" and sits on a red marble base atop a painted wooden pedestal. The highly detailed depicting of Van Cleve, a well-known French sculptor, was executed when Caffieri was 50 years old in the apex of his career. The bust exhibits fine detail throughout, most particularly in the facial features and the curled hair. This sculpture was notably written about and depicted in the Architectural Digest essay on the prominent New York collector and historian, Robert Allen.
