Description
**First Time At Auction**

Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful sterling silver and turquoise cuff bracelet featuring kachina (katsina) figures. The band is comprised of five narrow 93% to 95% silver wires that are twisted or flattened, and taper to the terminal tips at the cuff opening. Joined to the widest area are three kachina figures, spiritual deities, that are hand-worked with remarkable details. They stand with arms to their sides, with incised patterns on their torsos and protruding curved faces with open work eyes. Their headdresses and bodies contain ovoid bezels of 12 turquoise stones which may be Royston turquoise. This pretty bracelet is wearable, so please measure your wrist accordingly! Size of band: 1.75" L x 2" Diameter (4.4 cm x 5.1 cm); opening size: 1" W (2.5 cm); kachina: 1.75" L x 1" W (4.4 cm x 2.5 cm); quality of silver: 93% to 95%; total weight: 69.8 grams

The Katsinim are supernatural beings who live in the high mountains of the San Francisco Peaks above traditional Hopi territory and speak to the Hopi through costumed dance and song. These dancers emerge from the round ceremonial kivas that are at the center of their communities, singly or in groups, and dance to the music of drums, rattles, and song. In imitation and representation of them are Katsina figures (katsina dolls, katsin-tihu). Kachinas are usually associated with the Hopi, however, the Zuni Pueblo of New Mexico also has a rich history of kachina making as well.
