Item Details
Description
Sixth-plate tintype of two soldiers of the 6th Company, 1st Battalion New York Sharpshooters. George N. Goold sits at right next to an unidentified comrade, and is identified from two alternate photographs (shown in pictures 3 and 4, copies of those images are included in this lot).

Goold was a 24-year old resident of Carlton, NY when he enlisted as a private on 8/5/1862. He mustered in on 9/13/1862. The 1st Battalion NY Sharpshooters was raised by former Berdan's Sharpshooters major William S. Rowland, and was primarily attached to the Fifth Corps during their service. Having passed an examination to gain a commission in the U.S. Colored Troops, Goold was ordered to report for duty in November, 1864. Sadly, he had been killed in action at Petersburg on 6/18/1864 and not listed as a casualty. A clear and crisp photograph from a rare and collectible unit.
