Description
While the soldier in this original Union soldier carte-de-visite (CDV) is currently unknown, he did leave an outstanding likeness behind. Sporting a dark jacket with veterans’ stripes on the sleeves and a prominent XII Corps badge on the chest, this proud-looking young soldier sits next to a photographer’s table on which rests his porkpie-style hat. We submit that the best part of this image is the soldier’s high leather boots, which feature what appear to be an embossed or sewn-in pentagram design. Backmarked “Whittaker & Co., Philadelphia”, this young soldier was one of comparably few Pennsylvanians who experienced both Gettysburg and the March to the Sea with the well-traveled XII Corps. CDV is in fine condition.
