Lot of official Tukugawa government editions of Chinese newspapers, 1860s:1. Kanpan Rikugo Sodan (官板六合叢談, Government World News), a Tokugawa government edition of a Chinese-language periodical published from 1857-1858 by the Shanghai branch of the London Missionary Press. It is regarded the “ancestor of newspapers in Japan.” 5 vols, traditional Japanese binding, woodblock printed on double-leaves of ricepaper. 23 cm. Fair-good condition (slight worming to some of the issues, wear and tear to paper labels on covers). 2. Chugai Shimpo, no. 1, ca. 1862. Official reprint sponsored by the Tokugawa government of the original Chinese publication issued by mission areas in South China, 1858. Contains news of China. 1 vol, traditional Japanese binding, woodblock printed on double-leaves of ricepaper. 22.5 cm.
