Born in 1874 in Portsmouth, NH, Susan Ricker Knox lived primarily in New York City, while summering in York Harbor, MA. She spent many winters exploring and painting in New Mexico and Arizona until the mid-1930's, when she began taking regular painting trips to Mexico. Much of her painting during her winters in the Southwest were of the nativechildren and people and the everyday aspects of their lives. These paintings stirred much interest back east and by 1925 she had become a well known American woman artist. During these trips to AZ and NM she also made a number of wood block prints of Southwestern subject matter that are very scarse today.
