SIZE IN INCHES: ohosoban, 7,25 x 16.5 inches
COMMENTS: A rarely seen design by Aoyama Seiji (1893-1969), also known as Masaharu Aoyama, was born in Saitama prefecture. He studied traditional Japanese ink painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. After his graduation he took a job at the Imperial Household Museum. ensuring a steady income. However Aoyama Masaharu retired rather early from this job in the late 1930s. Aoyama worked primarily as a painter and printmaker. His work aligned closely with the sosaku-hanga art movement, but his technical skills as a carver and printer exceeded most of his peers. He was active as an artist from the 1920s through the 1960s.
