WARREN DEWITT CHENEY (American 1907-1979) The Transfiguration Alaskan marble 43 x 19 x 8 inches, with a 36.50 x 20 x 12 inch black painted wood base Exhibited: Gump Galleries. SF, 1934; Marie Sterner Galleries NY, 1936. Illustrated: The Architect and Engineer magazine June 1936 p. 18 Born in Paris, France on Sept. 19, 1907 of American parents. Cheney grew up in Berkeley, CA. At 16 he entered UC, continuing a long family tradition (his uncle was the author Sheldon Warren Cheney). In the 1920s he studied art in Paris at Ecole des Beaux Arts, with Hans Hofmann in St Tropez, and received an M.A. degree from Columbia University. He had numerous public exhibitions and commissions throughout the 1930s including commissions by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Teamsters Union building in Oakland, CA. Solo shows included Gump Galleries, San Francisco; the J. Seligmann Galleries and the Marie Sterner Galleries in New York. His work was included in exhibitions at the San Francisco Legion of Honor and the SF Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Los Angeles Museum; & the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
