Description
Two antique glazed begonia Majolica trinket dishes / trays. One piece is the Etruscan Griffen Smith & Hill Majolica Begonia Leaf Tray / trinket dish, signed ETRUSCAN MAJOLICA on the underside. This piece has primarily green, purple, yellow, and brown hues throughout the design. The second piece also features the begonia design. Primarily brown, red, white, yellow, and green hues. Unsigned, possibly by the same maker. Both pieces have ruffled edges. Both have crazing & wear to glaze, some chips. Pieces are similar in size approx. 1.5H x 9W in. Some information: ‘The late 1870s to 1890 saw "Majolica mania" across England and Europe, and the craze soon swept the US as well. Griffen, Smith & Hill of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania used natural elements - leaves, shells, and seaweed - to create beautiful tableware and home decor that is still prized today. The begonia leaf pattern was done by pressing real begonia leaves into soft clay and making a mold that mirrored the form found in nature.
