Early "Blondie"Â Comic Strip, July 7, 1931, Dagwood and Blondie Try to Get Married! Original Art
Oversized sheet, measuring 18" x 4.5", Great Britain rights reserved, copyright 1931. A large print comic strip by Chic Young, dated July 7, 1931, distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc. The strip features Blondie and Dagwood in a getaway car, fleeing their parents in an attempt to get married. Matted to the overall size of 22.25" x 8.5". Light edge toning, else very good.
"Blondie"Â was first published on September 8, 1930. Chic Young wrote and drew for the comic until his death in 1973, when creative control was passed on to his son Dean. Blondie and Dagwood had a lengthy and harrowing courtship, as Dagwood's parents refused to give consent to a marriage below their son's social class. J. Bolling Bumstead was a millionaire, having made his fortune as a railroad magnate. The couple's trials lasted from 1931-32, until finally, after a month and a half hunger strike, Dagwood was disinherited. On February 17, 1933, he and Blondie married and moved to the suburbs in order to be a "normal", middle-class family.
