August Klein (Austrian 1824 to 1890). A whimsical cast brass fish vessel with a hinged lid. The lid opens to reveal the narrow interior that is stamped with the maker's mark: "A. Klein Wien." August Klein was an Austrian artist who exhibited at the World Exhibition in Vienna, Paris, and London. This carp fish certainly has a Japanese style. During the 19th century, many artists like Wien were captivated by the art coming from Eastern Asia and wished to capture this nature-inspired aesthetic.
