Finely carved sculpture of an octopus with curled tentacles and a rat riding on its head from the legend of Feke and the rat in which a rat tricked an octopus to bring him to dry land, taking back his promise to repay the octopus. Ortquist was a master carver for the American Samoa Council on Arts, Culture and the Humanities as well as a resident at the Jean P. Hayden Museum in Pago Pago.
Wood,Approx. 11" t x 17 1/2" w x 10 1/2" d,
Signed "Sven O. Samoa" on bottom.
From the collection of a North Stonington, Connecticut gentleman.
