Description
The coloured tapestry sewn with knitted wool and silk. Portrait of a young David, holding Goliath's head aloft. An entourage with Goliath's sword and armour to his left. A woman kneeling to his right, proffering him the victor's wreath, accompanied by two other female figures. Original border with decorative fruits and tendrils. An old inscription in ink on the back reads (tr.) "Flemish Audenarde tapestry 1650 in the tapestry room, series I. no. 2 David and Goliath, 3.00 m tall, 4.12 m wide". Traces of use due to age, slightly restored in places, otherwise a beautiful piece, the colours still vibrant. Dimensions 285 x 411 cm.Provenance: From Castle Schwerinsburg in Pomerania, which was built in 1720.Condition: II
