This gamelan music instrument is a type of Saron. Gamelan is traditional music from Bali and Java, Indonesia. The instrument normally has seven bronze bars placed on top of a resonating frame (rancak). This piece has 5 bars. It is place on the floor And the player sits while playing. A wooden mallet is used to produce melodies. The invention of the Saron dates back to the 17 th Century. This piece was a sentimental remembrance played on a honeymoon over 30 years ago and immediately bought from the musicians to remember the dinner and evening. It is hand carved and hand painted from a single piece of wood. There are metal loops attached to the piece that would attach to a cloth wrapped around the musician to keep the Saron from sliding away while playing. A fairly weight piece. Intricately hand crafted , slight crack due to use, exposure wood of climate and age. Some brass piece need to be re attached. A masterpiece work of art!
