Description
Walt Whitman Autograph Note Signed with Initials. One page, 5" x 3" (sight), Camden, New Jersey; September 5, [1876]. Postcard reads in full: "I sent today, same address as this card my two volumes. Please notify me by postal card soon as they reach you safely. Mrs. Taylors and Mr. Irelands sets have also been sent." With a postscript that reads: "Condition with me much the same." Signed, "WW." It is matted and framed with a photograph of Whitman to an overall size of 10.5" x 17". Not examined outside of the frame. Affixed to the back of the frame is an envelope containing three typed letters from 1956 which provide contextual information for the postcard. According to one from an Edwin H. Miller, an associate professor of English at Simmons College, this postcard was sent to a Moncure D. Conway, a Unitarian preacher and friend of Whitman. Conway had sent Whitman the money for the two-volume Centennial Edition of 1876 and requested Whitman furnish himself, along with Mrs. Taylor and Mr. Ireland with the books in return, which Whitman duly did. Condition: Toned with some soiling. Matting is also toned with some foxing. Frame is lightly rubbed and scratched.
