LENOX, OHIO NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, five alphabet and numeral rows with foliate motifs along the right side above four pictorial motifs of plants with a blank space to the left, possibly unfinished, signed below "Lenox Ohio. 1849 / Cordelia Fowler Born Sep 4. 1831". Housed under glass in a period wood frame. Dated 1849. 13 3/8" x 10 1/2" sight, 18 1/4" x 15 1/4" OA.
Excellent overall condition with a few minute stains, a small hole in lower right corner, frame with some wear, surface scratches, and marks. Not examined out of frame.

Catalogue Note: Identified as Cordelia A. Fowler, who was born in 1831 to parents Erastus Fowler (1793-1875) and Temperance Merrill (1796-1871). Originally from Connecticut, her parents married in 1817, moved to Lenox, Astabula Co., OH prior to 1820, and had 11 children. Cordelia married Edwin Emerson Lafferty in 1857 and had at least two sons. She died on March 14, 1914 and is buried at East Lenox Cemetery in Lenox Center, OH.
