Description
Pyrite Sun (a.k.a. Pyrite Dollar, Sun Dollar, Marcasite Sun) on black shale, broken in half right through the middle. Needs repair, or mounted as a unique art piece split asunder. Your choice. The black shale is about 9 x 9 x 0.75 inches when the two pieces are aligned together. The sun is about 3.5 x 3 inches. These have been known as Marcasite Suns, marcasite being an iron sulfide like pyrite but with a different crystal structure. X-ray diffraction studies have revealed that these iron sulfide disks being found in Illinois coal mines are actually mostly pyrite, not marcasite.Date: Country (if not USA): State: IllinoisCity: SpartaProvenance: William Mayrsohn Collection
