East Asia, Japan, Ando Jubei (Japanese, 1876-1953), 20th century. A beautiful brass jar embellished with a technique called tomeiyu shippo (transparent enamels). The exterior of the gorgeous vessel is coated with an emerald green enamel cloisonne exterior and painted with a gorgeous floral motif in shades of white, yellow, pink, purple, black, grey, and green. Sitting upon a flat, circular base, the elegant vase presents thin walls that spread gently outwards to a sloped shoulder, a brief neck, and a flared rim. Petite recessed dots organized in rows decorate the brass, creating a wonderful textured motif from beneath the glass, and an incised design of two petalled flowers with leaves decorates the brass on the side opposite the painted flowers. A lustrous ring of brass decorates the rim and base. A maker's mark can be found on the base indicating this was made by the famous Ando Jubei workshop. Two chips to exterior and minor indentation to rim. Light surface wear commensurate with age. Stable surface fissure near painted flowers. Otherwise, excellent with nice remaining pigments.
