Description
Frederick Wingate (American, Augusta, Maine, 1782-1864), circa 1810. Tall case 8-day clock, (number 233), having a bonnet top with brass finials and pierced fret, turned column supports, the face with moonphase dial, gilded foliate spandrels, Roman numerals, second hand and date ring, the waist with flame veneer door flanked by ringed brass capped three-quarter pilasters, and rising on a plinth base. Signed "FR Wingate/Augusta/No 233", with two graphite inscriptions to interior of door, "J. Adams Nov 12 1864" and Sept 30, 1874/S.B. Cosnuls" ?. Provenance: From the Lifetime Collection of Billy S. Arant, Jr., Chattanooga, TN. Approx. h. 90.25", w. 19", d. 9.5".
