Small certificate stating that FK Phoenix has paid for 6 shares of stock in the "Joint Stock Association, organized for the purchase, ownership and management of the 'American Freeman' printing establishment at Milwaukie, June 1, 1841." Issued Sept. 24th, 1846. Signed by president Charles (illegible) and secretary John B. Jillson. Transferred on the reverse. 3.25 x 7.75" Folds, discoloration on reverse. The "American Freeman" was an anti-slavery newspaper from the abolitionist Liberty Party published 1844-1848 in Waukesha/Prairieville, a station on the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves and an abolitionist center before the American Civil War. The newspaper's motto was "Universal Equality of Human Rights."
