Item Details
Description
Group of five scarce to rare Pennsylvania Turnpike stock certificates. 1) Best is Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, issued March 16, 1795 to Daniel Brodhead. Daniel Brodhead IV (October 17, 1736 [x=#8211/] November 15, 1809) was an American military and political leader during the American Revolutionary War and early days of the United States. He was a Brevet Brigadier General in the Continental Army, awarded that status by George Washington. He led the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment. He later served in the Pennsylvania General Assembly. On November 13, 1789, he was appointed Surveyor General of Pennsylvania and held the post for the next eleven years. The Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike Road was the first long distance stretch of broken-stone and gravel surface built in the country in accordance with plans and specifications. It was the first important turnpike road in the United States and the most important section of the famous of the Pennsylvania Road (which ran to Pittsburg). This road provided cheap transportation between the populous coast regions and the "bread basket" of the newborn Republic, situated in the vicinity of Lancaster. It was the first privately built road of importance and the beginning of organized road improvement after a long period of economic confusion following the American Revolution. 2) Huntingdon Cambria and Indiana Turnpike issued November 10, 1819 signed by Blair. 3) York and Gettysburg Turnpike issued July 1, 1821 signed by Demuth. 4) Two different stock certificates for two different bridges over the river Susquehanna, one at McCall's ferry, the other at the town of Lewisburg. The first issued in 1814; the second issued in 1818. Please inspect.Date: Country (if not USA): State: PennsylvaniaCity: Provenance: Ken Prag Collection
