1801-Dated, First Edition Imprint titled, "ACTS PASSED AT THE FIRST SESSION OF THE SIXTH CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES." City of Washington: Printed by Samuel Harrison Smith, Choice Extremely Fine.
Original 1801 issued Imprint. This 6th Session of Congress passed the controversial "Judiciary Act," signed into law by President John Adams in February. It created the District and Circuit Courts, and provided the framework for Adams's "midnight Appointments" to the bench. This historic imprint remains very clean and fresh in appearance, has its original Half-title, with pale blue outer plain wrappers with notation in brown ink laid down over stiff wove paper. It is Untrimmed and Partially Uncut, with a fine split on the edge of the last index page. A printed title page for "The Laws of the United States of America, Vol. 5, 1801" is at the very back of this book. There are 227-352 pages, .iv [20], includes Table of Contents, plus the Index. As Henry Adams, the President's grandson, observed of the Act, "The Federalists used their last moments of power to establish themselves in the posts it created. In Jefferson's words, they retreated into the Judiciary as a stronghold."
