American Artist and Painter John Trumbull Sells Two of His Famous Historical Prints as "The Painter of the Revolution"
JOHN TRUMBULL (1756-1843). Historical American Artist and Painter, also known as "The Painter of the Revolution" most notable for his historical paintings located in the United States Capitol Rotunda and Yale University Art Gallery, with his Painting of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence being used on the reverse of the modern Two-Dollar note.
November 13, 1790-Dated Federal Period, Partly-Printed Invoice Receipt Signed, "Jno. Trumbull", measuring 4" x 7.75", 1 page, no place, Very Fine. A receipt for a deposit of "Three Guineas" made by DANIEL SARGENT, SR. (1730-1806), Gloucester, Massachusetts merchant and brother of Revolutionary War hero Paul Dudley Sargent. Daniel Sargent (1764-1842), was a politician who was close friends with John Quincy Adams. This Document Signed for his purchase of, in part:
"... Two Prints, one representing the Battle of Bunker's Hill, and the other the Death of General Montgomery...".
The blank reverse side bears a Signed Receipt by Daniel Sargent's son, HENRY SARGENT (1770-1845), himself a noted Painter ("Landing of the Pilgrims", located at Pilgrim Hall, Plymouth) and military officer. The fine quality watermarked laid period paper is lightly toned, with deeper tone at blank lower-right (not affecting the vivid signature above) and with two archival tape reinforcements on the back to seal a vertical fold split. This is an interesting combination of related soldiers and artists. Boldly Signed by Trumbull at bottom, with Trumbull's signature measuring nearly 3" long. Very rare and highly important.
Trumbull's massive U.S. Capitol Rotunda Revolutionary War historical Paintings featured prominently recently, being seen in the background, mounted on the Walls of the Rotunda during the January 6th, 2021 storming of the United States Capitol riot and violent attack against the United States Congress. Thankfully, only minor cleaning was required to the priceless national treasure Paintings subsequently, and the Paintings remain safely on view.
John Trumbull (June 6, 1756-November 10, 1843) was an American artist of the early independence period, notable for his historical paintings of the American Revolutionary War, of which he was a veteran. He has been called "The Painter of the Revolution". Trumbull's Declaration of Independence (1817), one of his four paintings which hang in the United States Capitol Rotunda, is used on the reverse of the current Two-dollar bill.
Daniel Sargent Sr. (March 18, 1730 " February 18, 1806) was an American merchant in Gloucester, Massachusetts and then Boston.
Sargent was born on March 18, 1730 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He was the son of Col. Epes Sargent (1690"1762) and Ester McCarty, daughter of Florence McCarty.[2] His brothers were Revolutionary war hero Paul Dudley Sargent (1745"1828) and John Sargent (1750"1824).[3]
Through his other brother Winthrop Sargent (1727"1793), he was the uncle of Judith Sargent Murray (1751"1820), the poet and advocate for women's rights, and Winthrop Sargent (1753"1820), Governor of Mississippi Territory. His father was one of the largest landholders in Gloucester and had is portrait painted in 1760 by John Singleton Copley two years before his death in 1762.
He was a very successful merchant who was referred to as the "merchant prince". He was engaged in the fishing business and foreign trade, moving to Newburyport, Massachusetts and then to Boston, where he had his offices at 25 and then 40 Long Wharf and owned Sargent's Wharf, Boston, MA.
