BLANCHE KELSO BRUCE (1841-1898). U.S. Senator from Mississippi from 1875 to 1881, born into Slavery in Virginia, later becoming the First Elected African-American Senator to serve a full term.
August 4, 1890-Dated, Partly-Printed Document Signed, "B.L. Bruce" as Recorder, 2 pages, measuring 10.5" x 8.5", Washington, DC, Very Fine. This Document is a Bill of Sale between Thomas F. Paxton and Thomas S. Paxton. Bruce signs at the bottom of the front panel as Recorder of Deeds. The handwritten "Schedule A" is in the hand of a T.F. Paxton and indicates the sale of a grocery store, all its stock, and fixtures. The document itself has edge fold splits, some being archivally repaired. The bold dark brown ink signature "B.L. Bruce" is in choice condition.
Blanche Kelso Bruce (March 1, 1841-March 17, 1898) was born into slavery in Prince Edward County, Virginia and went on to become a politician who represented Mississippi as a Republican in the United States Senate from 1875 to 1881. He was the first elected African-American senator to serve a full term (Hiram R. Revels, also of Mississippi, was the first African American to serve in the U.S. Senate but did not complete a full term).
