Portrait of Racehorse Breeder William Stuart Stirling-Crawford (1819-1883)
Circa 1845.
The unsigned oil on canvas portrait attributed to Sir Francis Grant British (1803-1878) depicts the subject and a bay horse with white nose displayed in an impressive gilt wood and painted frame of the period with a family crest and small hand painted inventory number 110.
Provided here is transcription from a note dated August 10, 1964 on letterhead of George Clarkson Antiques of St. Louis, Missouri states that this painting was included in the collection of the Earl of Buckleigh with documentation at Witt Library Courtauld Institute, London. No confirmation has been made. Other unconfirmed reports state that another version of this painting hangs in Jockey Club rooms in Newmarket.
Canvas measures 56 x 47.5 with a framed size of 67 x 59 x 2 inches.
Provenance: The multi-generation collection of an early Kansas City family in the same home since 1962.

Condition
Very good restored condition, wax lined and on replacement stretchers. There are no issues of scratches, craquelure, losses, or damage of any type to any degree. A technical record of treatment from Forest Bailey, conservator of paintings at William Rockhill Nelson Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri is included.
