Description
Painting by William Mellor,Endsdale,Westmorland, circa 1880
The painting measures 12 inches by 8 inches in a frame 17 inches by 13 inches.
Davids notes: This painting, and the other similar one by Mellor(lot 33), is quite extraordinary. The quality and condition is breathtaking, and I urge anyone interested to come into the gallery during the exhibition hours and look at the works in person. The detail and fineness of the work, is really beyond description. The condition is almost mint, which is astonishing for something over 100 years old. I only found one tiny dot of restoration, in the lower center down in one of the rocks, by the stream, too small to even discuss. I do feel the frames were probably repainted over the years, but otherwise the frames are in very nice condition as well.

Generally painted in summer and early fall, delicately rendered foliage bathed in sunlight is emblematic of his work. He often inscribed the back of his paintings with the location in which where they were made. Born in Barnsley, United Kingdom in 1851, his father Joseph Mellor was also a landscape painter. He received much of artistic education in his fathers studio. Mellor died in Harrogate, United Kingdom in 1931.
In 1993 Christies in London sold a pair of Mellor paintings in their March 31 sale of British and Continental pictures, lot 12.We believe lot 33 and 37 in our sale are the same two paintings. One of the paintings in the Christies sale is titled, On the Hills, Deepdale near Barnard Castle, the same title as lot 33 as written on the
