Theory of Rain, Hail, and Snow, Water-spouts, Land-Spouts, Variable Winds, and Barometric Fluctuations, 2 offprints from the 'Journal of the Franklin Institute', 16pp. & 8pp., foxed and lightly water-stained, the first 3 leaves with short tear to inner margin, disbound but still attached from being bound together (becoming loose), 8vo, Philadelphia, 1836.
⁂ James Pollard Espy (1785-1860), known as the "Storm King", was an American meteorologist who developed a convection theory of storms. In 1834 he became meteorologist to both the Franklin Institute and the American Philosophical Society, both in Philadelphia, and presented his theory to the Society in 1836. It was later published in Boston in 1841 as The Philosophy of Storms.
The first offprint has a drop-head title 'Essays in Meterology' and was printed in the 'Journal of the Franklin Institute' vol.17, the second is titled 'Essays on Meteorology. No.IV. North-East Storms, Volcanoes, and Columnar Clouds' but no volume no. is stated.
