Description
Hubert Julian Stowitts
The Work of Stowitts for the Fox-God [Fay-Yen-Fah]. Hollywood, CA: George Palmer Putnam, 1939. First American edition (after Paris: Bernard Freres, 1928), limited to 400 numbered copies, this copy 111. Publisher's printed cloth. 15 1/4 x 13 inches (38 x 33 cm); [iv], 41, [1] pp., [52] ff plates. Near fine.
A striking pictorial album of mounted colored designs. Hubert Julian Stowitts (1892-1953) was born in Nebraska, became (among many things), a ballet dancer, actor, athlete, designer and painter--working as a dance partner with, for example, Anna Pavlova and Ida Rubinstein of the Ballet Russe. His designs for the opera Fay-Yen-Fah (1926-27) are representative of his exuberantly bold and controversial designs. He created many exceptional projects in his career, notably a series of Fifty Portraits of American Athletes for the Berlin Olympic games (1936).
