Description
3rd-5th century AD. A group of three lids representing human faces, each with the face surrounded by abundant hair and beard covering the ears and the chin, imitating the head of Silenus with long ears; accompanied by a mount with human face representing a Germanic warrior, probably from a late Roman vessel. See Boucher, S. & Tassinari, S., Musée de la Civilisation Gallo-Romaine à Lyon: Bronzes Antiques. Tome 1 Inscriptions, Statuaire, Vaisselle, Lyon, 1976, item 147, p.126, for comparison. 172 grams total, 33-69mm (1 1/4 - 2 3/4"). From a private collection formed in the Netherlands; previously in a European collection formed prior to 1980. The applique forming the handles of the vessels were often in the shape of a mask with a Bacchic figure, curly beard and archaic type; these handles were mainly flat, with a somewhat long and narrow turn. The 'situlae', or semi-cubic bronze containers, were often decorated on their handles with different appliques, such as these examples. In the late Empire new decorative models were introduced, like the rare mount of barbarian warrior here visible. [4, No Reserve]
