A Rare Vintage Marcus Books poster depicting a Harper's weekly illustration by Robert Nast from Oct. 28, 1876 drawn in response to South Carolina's violent 1876 election campaign. The address listed on the poster is 540 McAllister St. in San Francsico, where the store existed from the mid 60s to the early 70s. " Marcus Book Store is the Nation's Oldest Black-Owned bookstore, now in it's 61th year of operation. The store was originally called Success Bookstore and was often visitor by such icons as Malcolm X, Maya Angelou, and Toni Morrison. It represented a place of unity for the Black community during the Civil Rights Movement, and also an important local for local authors such as Amira Baraka and Ishmael Reed to hold readings and events during the 1970s.
