Description
Western Europe or United States, ca. 1891 CE. A fabulous glass and iron show globe with a wooden case from 1946 that was created for shipping. The globe has a beautiful iron pedestal with foliate designs and a concave base. Along the base edge is a patent mark "PAT D. JUNE 13 1891" and loops for suspension. The pedestal supports an egg-shaped glass bowl, held in place with three iron rods, and capped with an ornamental iron finial. Included is the shipping container for transport via train and packing paper from 1946 with the written address and two shipping labels that show this was destined for Little Rock, Arkansas. Apothecary show globes were vessels for holding colorful liquids and were often suspended outside of apothecary shops or drug stores to symbolize these establishments, much like the pharmacy cross symbol today. Size of globe: 10.35" Diameter x 22" H (26.3 cm x 55.9 cm); case: 14" Diameter x 23" H (35.6 cm x 58.4 cm)
