Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Gulf Coast, Veracruz, Classic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 900 CE. An amazing molded terracotta standing figure with separately made articulated arms. The ancients would have attached these with organic materials which have not survived the tests of time; the arms are now attached with wire, and the figure is displayed on a special stand. The fascinating face of this figure presents with almond shaped eyes, a petite nose, and a pronounced overbite. The headdress itself is a work of art - large and with a crest that appears to mimic a single feather down its center. Huge earrings hang from the ears. The figure also wears two bands around its upper body, but is otherwise nude, with exposed male genitalia. An opening at the top of the head allows it to be played as a whistle. This mysterious figure is a wonderful example of the artistic skill of ancient Veracruz. Size: 3.125" W x 7.75" H (7.9 cm x 19.7 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Arms are attached using modern wire. Small repair on back of head and small loss from one side of ear/earring. Otherwise in great condition with really nice deposits and root marks.
