1. VITTORIO SELLA. End of the Mobuku Valley, 1906, Sella number R 71. 11.3x15.3" gelatin silver print, c. 1907, on 13x16.5" heavy brown paper. Typed label verso: LOBELIA AND GROUNDSEL ZONE. Inscribed in ink verso: Ruwenzori / Ruwenzori, Africa / Upper end of the Mobuku Valley. / The expedition of (Duke of the Abruzzi) / this gorge to the snow mountains / inscribed in pencil verso: p. 146 / R I 71 / Upper Mobuku Valley / 71.

2. VITTORIO SELLA. Senecios in Mobuku Valley, 1906, Sella number R 145. 11.3x15.3" gelatin silver print, c. 1907, on 13x16.5" heavy brown paper. Inscribed in ink verso: Senecios in Mobuku Valley / pencil p. 222 / Senecios / R I 145.

3. VITTORIO SELLA. The Bujuku Valley, 1906, Sella number R 152 (146). 11.3x15.3" gelatin silver print, c. 1907, on 13x16.5" heavy brown paper. Typed label taped down verso: IN BUJUKU VALLEY. The most important / river basin to the east of the mountain / chain. It is surrounded by five mountain / groups and is fed by the greater glaciers / of Mt. Stanley, Mt. Speke and Mt. Gessi. Inscribed in ink and pencil verso: In Bujuku Valley / Ruwenzori Mts. Africa / in pencil p. 272 / 146 / R I 152.

Vittorio Sella (1859-1943) was the leading large format, mountaineering photographer of the late 19th and early 20th century, renowned for his spectacular high-altitude photographs of glacial floes, peaks and valleys. Sella traveled the world, photographing in the European Alps, the Caucasus, Mt. Saint Elias (Alaska Yukon Border), and the Himalayan Sikkim. In the early 1900s he photographed mountains in Africa Ruwanzari and the Himalayan Karakoram.

2. R 145 Very Good: 1/4" tear in lower edge of print mount has corner wear edge wear and tape verso.
3. R 152 (146) Very Good: 1/4x1/8" black mark on upper L edge of print mount has corner wear edge wear and tape verso.
