An early, and slightly confusing, handwritten note on the back reads: This sampler was made in 1830 by Amelia Culp, a sister to Mary Culp who was the great- grandmother of Almyr Cooper Ballentine. Mary Ann Culp, born 18 July 1819, was the eldest of John and Rebecca Culp’s five children. She married Noah P. Remick and moved to Wheeling, West Virginia where they had three children.
