Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque) culture, ca. 300 to 700 CE. An intriguing and rare squat terracotta headrest with a broad rectangular platform and two thick tubular pillars supporting a concave resting surface that sinks at its center forming a gentle arch. Painted a warm hue of light orange, this lovely headrest is a remarkable example from the Jamacoaque peoples. Size: 6.75" L x 3.125" W x 4" H (17.1 cm x 7.9 cm x 10.2 cm)
An identical headrest of a slightly smaller scale can be found at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University under accession number 1973.81.17.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
Provenance: ex-private Valencia, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1980's

Condition
TL holes on underside of resting surface and base. Chip to edge of resting surface. A few light nicks/chips, abrasions, and char marks throughout. Otherwise, intact and excellent with impressive remaining pigments.
