A PAIR OF FRENCH PORCELAIN VASES, MARTIAL REDON, PAINTED BY ARMANO, LIMOGES 1891-1896
both of sevres style, with two handles, on a square plinth, both featuring portraits in a gold detailed cartouche with an anthemion motif, one of Napoleon and the other of Josephine, both vases inscribed under the base, Napoleon sits against a cream ground, dressed in uniform with a red sash and gold detailing, Josephine sits against a cream ground, dressed in a deep pink period gown with tulle, gold earrings and headbands, each signed armano to the right perimeter, a gold painted sunburst is formed around the base of the body mimicking the gold rim and gold plinth, all against a green ground, both stamped with blue factory mark underglaze, stamped with green maker's mark underglaze, each inscribed with the title and numbered 054 under base; overall height: 28 cm (11 in.), dimensions of base: 8.89 x 8.89 cm (3 1/2 x 3 1/2 in.)
CONDITION
Both vases appear in good condition. Overall surface dust visible to the naked eye, most notably around the bodies and bases of the vases. Minor surface scratches and scuffs to bases. Visible adhesive to the rim of the Napoleon vase. Rubbing to the gilt on both rims of the vases, resulting in scattered losses. Inspection under UV shows overpainting to the base of Napoleon's vase.
