Title: Pair Victorian Bristol Amethyst Glass Lidded VasesSize: 10 ¾” (27.3 cm) tall x 3 ½” (8.9 cm) diameter.Description: A lovely pair of amethyst glass vases that have been hand decorated with a white glass enamel decoration. The contrast of black and white is so striking. The hand painting is delicate and expert. The matching molded vases were made with a dark, almost-black amethyst glass. The pantiles on the bases are ground down. The vases have flat round mouths with cylindrical necks to rounded separate shoulders. Below their shoulders, the vases have ovoid bodies which taper to raised rounded feet. Gilding has been used to decorate the mouths, shoulders and a line above the feet. The front side of each vase has been painted with almost identically decorations of seeding grass heads, fuchsias, and daisies. They have been artistically painted, even showing the veins on leaves and the stamens on flowers. The matching lids have ground stoppers with ruffled mouths. The lids actually form cups. The interior below the mouth is deep and tapered, almost like a cup. They have both been decorated with gilding on the mouth edge and a line at the mid-point. The only marks are matching marks on lids and vase bases. Both vases and lids have the number 67. A manufacture mark to keep the pairs together. MEASUREMENTS 10 ¾” (27.3 cm) tall x 3 ½” (8.9 cm) diameter. Weight 1 lb 8.7 oz (705 g) CONDITION There are no chips, cracks, or breaks. There is wear to the gilding especially around the mouth of both vases. The white enameling is fresh and bright. Both vases have a tiny mark of white toward the back of each vase. This may be where a piece of white was dripped and then ground. A stunning matching pair of Bristol glass vases that have survived to the present. I love the contrast of black and white. Much handwork went into their manufacture.
