The Works of Jacques Delille (Oeuvres de Jacques Delille) (19 vols)
Lot consists of the works and translations of French poet Jacques Delille, 1738-1813. He came to national prominence with his translation of Virgil’s Georgics and the Aeneid, as well as his fine translation of Milton's Paradise Lost. He later enhanced his international reputation with the didactic poem on gardening (Le Jardin). He barely survived the slaughter of the French Revolution and lived for some years outside France, including three years in England.
Collected here: Paradis Perdu, Paris: Chez Giguet, 1805-1808, (3 vols).; Les Georgiques, 1804; Les Bucoliques, 1806; L'Eneide de Virgil, 1804. (4 vols).; Les Jardins, 1801.; L'Imagination, 1806 (2 vols.); les Trois Regnes, 1808. (2 vols); Poesies Fugitives, 1807. L'Hommes de Champs, 1800.; La Pitie, 1803.; La Conversa, 1812.; Les Oevres Posthumes, 1820. All volumes published in Paris and uniformly bound in 3/4 tan calf, with gilt titles to red morocco spine labels.
