19th C. Indo-Persian Iron / Brass Chanfron Armor
19th C. Indo-Persian Iron / Brass Chanfron Armor
Item Details
Description
Central Asia, Indo-Persian, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An amazing piece of ornamental armor for a noble steed's head known as a chanfron. The armor is comprised of a curved iron plate that fits over the horse's face with brass trimmings and engraved motifs. An intimidating spike is set in the sun shaped rondel between the eyes. Such a spike could have conceivably pierced a shield or armor as the horse rushed headfirst into battle; however, this piece was likely made for ornamental or parade use. The spike is attached with a threaded bolt and can be removed from the plate. Three arched bands protrude across the snout to offer additional protection. Two ornate cobras are etched into the top, and arabesque shapes adorn the ear flaps. The band down the center and the bordering strips are brass with engraved foliate motifs. The verso is covered with a padded cloth lining and integral iron loops with leather straps and buckles for attaching the chanfron to the horse's head. Size: 28.5" L x 10.75" W (72.4 cm x 27.3 cm)

Barding is a form of armor for war horses that was developed in the eastern kingdom of Parthia and the practice spread to western Europe with the expansion of the Macedon Kingdom under Alexander the Great. The face armor was known as chanfrons and was made of metal and sometimes cuir bouilli - a type of stiff leather. The iron style of chanfron was used in warfare until the 16th century in Europe. Such armor saw a resurgence in the 19th century with the Victorian interest in Medieval knights and chivalry.

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA acquired in 2015; ex-Andy Garcia collection
