Description
An early pintail decoy in original paint with old varnished surface and glass eyes carved by Richard Janson, 1939. Written on bottom: "Fresh Air Flat Decoy, Richard L. Janson, 1939, Sonoma Creek, Calif". Stamped HOYT. Richard Ludwig Janson (1872–1951) carved his decoys using a small ax, a carving knife and sandpaper. At the posthumous dedication of a Sonoma Creek bridge named in Janson’s honour, authorities said "Janson’s work was the ‘gold standard’ against which all other Pacific Coast decoys are evaluated".
