Description
The Idler was an illustrated monthly magazine published in Great Britain from 1892 to 1911. It was founded by Robert Barr, a short story writer and novelist from Canada, and it featured short stories, poetry, and novellas by authors such as Guy de Maupassant, Arthur Conan Doyle, Kipling, H. Rider Haggard, and Mark Twain. The books here include Volumes I, II, IV, VI, VII, VIII, X, XI, XII, and XIV. Volumes I to X were published in London by Chatto & Windus and Volumes XI to XIV were published by W R Russell. The ones by Chatto & Windus have gilt decorated covers and gilt decorated spines and the ones published by Russell just have gilt decorated spines. Volume II has a frontis of Mark Twain and short story by him entitled “The Claimant”, while Volume IV has a story by Conan Doyle titled “The Case of Lady Sannox”. Volumes VI to VIII have all the chapters for “The Stark Munro Letters” by Conan Doyle. The books come in different sizes too. Volumes I to VIII are 8 3/4 x 6 in. wide and Volumes X to XIV are 10 x 7 1/4 in. wide. The first seven volumes are generally in very good condition, with light wear on a few, and the last three have some pages that are slightly loose.
