⁂ Richard Carlile (publisher and campaigner for universal suffrage, 1790-1843) was an important agitator for the establishment of freedom of the press and parliamentary rights. He was often criticised for his distribution of radical writings, and to publish political texts such as Paine's works he split them into sections and sell them as pamphlets. In the same year of the publication of this work, Carlile was found guilty of blasphemy and seditious libel and sentenced to three years in Dorchester Gaol.
