Description
Near East, Byzantine Empire, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. . A double sided glass cameo with religious icons and a semi-translucent yellow hue. On one side are two figures, one slightly larger, most likely the Virgin Mary and an infant Jesus. On the verso is a bishop or saint with a processional cross and a halo. Religious Christian themes were the main source of inspiration for art in the Byzantine empire and the fine details on both sides are impressive for such a petite piece. Size: .56" L x .43" W (1.4 cm x 1.1 cm)
